ODF and Patch Panels: Managing Fibre at the Rack and the Cabinet
An optical distribution frame (ODF) is the point where incoming fibre cable is terminated, spliced, organised and patched. Get it right and moves, adds and changes take minutes. Get it wrong and every change becomes a risk of damaging a neighbouring fibre.
Why the ODF Matters
- Protection — the splice tray holds the splice and the bend radius, so nothing hangs on the bare fibre
- Organisation — incoming cable, splices and patch cords are separated into distinct zones
- Testability — each port is individually accessible for OTDR or power meter testing
- Change management — patching is done at the front panel; the splice remains untouched
Rack Mount Options
- Fixed rack mount panel — a simple 1U, 2U or 4U panel with a fixed adapter plate and a sliding or removable splice tray. Lowest cost, adequate where changes are rare.
- Sliding rack mount terminal box — the drawer slides forward so the splice tray is fully accessible without removing the panel from the rack. Standard for central offices and data centres.
- Swivel / rotating panel — the adapter panel rotates to expose the rear for splicing. Used where rack depth is limited.
- Modular high-density shelf — a chassis taking interchangeable LGX or cassette modules, allowing the port count to grow without replacing the frame.
Wall Mount and Cabinet Options
- Wall mount ODF — a sealed box with splice trays and adapters, sized 12 to 96 ports, for buildings where no rack exists
- Street cabinet ODF — rated for outdoor temperature and humidity, often with a hinged door and separate splice and patch zones
- Pole mount box — compact 8 to 24 port enclosure for aerial FTTH distribution
Adapter and Connector Choices
- SC simplex / duplex — the most common panel format, easy to handle, moderate density
- LC quad — four LC adapters in an SC footprint, doubling density for data centre and metro use
- FC and ST — legacy formats still found in industrial and older telecom installations
- MPO / MTP — 8 or 12 fibre per connector, used in 40G/100G data centre patching
- Polish — UPC for data, APC (green) where back reflection must be minimised, as in FTTH PON
Key Specification Points
- Port count — match to the cable core count plus 20-30% spare for growth
- Rack units — 1U typically holds 12-24 ports with SC, 24-48 with LC quad
- Splice capacity — at least equal to the port count, and preferably 1.5x
- Cable entry — gland plates for loose tube and armoured cable, with strain relief
- Bend radius control — every routing path must maintain 10x the cable diameter minimum
Installation Notes
- Terminate and test the cable before routing patch cords, so faults are isolated early
- Label both ends of every fibre with a unique identifier and keep a written record
- Use the correct colour code — TIA-598-C in North America, IEC 60304 in Europe
- Leave a service loop of at least 1 m inside the frame for future re-splicing
- Keep unused adapters capped to prevent dust ingress
Ordering
Huifiber supplies rack mount, sliding drawer, wall mount and cabinet ODFs from 8 to 288 ports, with SC, LC, FC, ST and MPO adapters, UPC or APC polish, and with or without pre-loaded pigtails and splice trays. Send us the port count, rack space available and connector type and we will quote a complete frame.
Frequently Asked Questions
The optical distribution frame is where outside-plant cable becomes patchable indoor infrastructure, so port density and cable management decide how maintainable the network stays.
What is an optical distribution frame used for?
An ODF terminates incoming fiber cable onto adapters and provides a tidy, labelled place to patch between outside-plant cable and active equipment. Splice trays inside keep the fusion splices protected and the fiber bend radius controlled.
What sizes and port counts are available?
We supply 19-inch rack-mount units in 1U, 2U and 4U heights with 12, 24, 48 and 96 ports, plus wall-mount enclosures for smaller sites.
What is included with the panel?
Panels are supplied ready to install with adapters, splice trays and cable management. Pigtails and pre-terminated assemblies can be added so the panel arrives as a complete kit.
Do you support both single mode and multimode?
Yes, and both SC and LC adapters are available in UPC and APC polish to match the rest of your network.
Can panels be supplied pre-terminated and tested?
Yes. Pre-terminated panels and assemblies are 100 per cent tested for insertion loss and return loss before shipment, with the results recorded against your order.
